Dropped $310 on a used board shear at an estate sale, now I'm torn on whether it was a bust
Saw a listing in Lansing three weeks ago for a 30 inch board shear, looked clean in the photos, guy wanted $310 cash and I drove 90 minutes to grab it. Got it home and the blade needs a full regrind plus the clamp is sloppy, so I'm already in another $80 and it still guillotines crooked on anything over 12 inches. Half of me says a dull shear is better than no shear and I should just pay to get it tuned, the other half says I should have put that money toward a new one and skipped the gamble. So which side am I on here, does a cheap used shear ever come out ahead, or do you just eat it and move on?
Ha, I did almost the same thing with a 24 inch shear and yeah, cheap used can come out ahead, but only if the frame and bed are solid and it's just the blade and clamp giving you grief. Mine was about $60 in parts and a local shop trued it up for $90, and it's cut dead straight for four years now, so I'd say get a quote on the regrind first and walk if it's over what a new one runs. The sloppy clamp is usually just worn bushings or a bent rod, and that's a weekend fix, not a deal breaker.
