My old press finally gave out mid-project
The wooden press my grandpa built in the 70s snapped a jaw plate while I was pressing a 400 page novel last Tuesday. I had to rig a quick clamp setup from my workbench in Lansing to finish the job, but the spine came out crooked anyway. I've been looking at a new cast iron model, but honestly I'm wondering if anyone has tips for patching up old presses instead... feels wrong to toss a piece of family history.

That jaw plate that snapped, is it cast iron or steel? If it's cast iron you might be able to braze it back together, but I'd want to know what actually failed before guessing at a fix.
