Rant: I rebound my grandma's 1962 cookbook last April, and the before and after still cracks me up
So my grandma's cookbook was falling apart. Pages loose, spine gone, cover held on with rubber bands and hope. I figured I'd do a quick fix, you know, some glue and a new spine. Nope. Took me six hours to pull it apart without tearing the pages. The paper was so brittle it practically crumbled if you looked at it funny.
I rebind it with a simple case binding, linen thread, board covers, the works. Two weeks later I hand it back to her. She flips through it, nods, says "nice." Then she starts reading me the recipe for her apple cake like nothing happened. I asked her if she noticed anything different. She goes "the rubber bands are gone." That's it. That was the big reveal.
Still, the before and after photos are wild. Went from a pile of loose paper to a book that sits flat on the counter. Anyone else rebind something old and have the owner totally miss the point? Or am I the only one showing off my work to people who don't care?
