Pro tip: don't repot a fiddle leaf fig right before a trip

I moved my fiddle leaf into a bigger pot with fresh soil on a Friday night in my kitchen in Sacramento, then left for a weekend away. Came back Sunday to half the leaves on the floor and soil that felt like soup, so I pulled it out, dumped the soggy mix, and put it back in the old pot with dry bark and perlite. Has anyone actually saved one after a bad repot, or should I just start over with a smaller plant?
