Showerthought: sphagnum moss beat my fancy peat mix for rooting cuttings, and it was not close
I rooted 12 pothos cuttings in straight sphagnum moss and 12 in a bagged peat perlite mix from the garden center. Same window, same water schedule, same temperatures in my apartment. After 5 weeks, 11 of the moss cuttings had roots, but only 4 of the peat ones did, and 2 of those rotted at the base. The moss holds air around the stem even when wet, while the peat mix stayed soggy and smothered them. A $6 bag of moss outperformed a $14 mix by a wide margin. Has anyone else switched to moss for rooting, or do you still swear by soil mixes?
