Thought carnivorous plants needed distilled water only, then my tap did fine for 8 months
I always heard you had to use distilled or rain water for sundews and pitcher plants or the minerals would kill them. So I bought gallons of distilled for two years. Then a bad ice storm hit here in Kalamazoo last winter and I could not get to the store for almost two weeks. My cape sundew was drying out and I panicked and just used tap. It not only lived, it threw out three new leaves in a week. So I kept using tap out of laziness and eight months later the plant is bigger than ever. I finally looked up my city water report and our water is really soft, only about 40 ppm. The rule is not about tap versus distilled at all, it is about dissolved minerals. If your water is hard, yeah, you are cooking your plant. Mine is basically rain water already. Now I want to know, has anyone else checked their actual water numbers instead of just buying jugs out of habit?
