Took me 5 years to realize I was overwatering my succulents every January
Found out when I caught condensation building up on the inside of a terracotta pot last winter and finally looked up what that actually meant, anyone else ever miss something that obvious for way too long?

That "soil staying wet too long" bit you mentioned is exactly it. It's wild how we just assume more water is better care, when really it's the same pattern as people overthinking their relationships or jobs. You think you're helping by adding something, but sometimes the best thing you can do is just back off and let things breathe. Same reason I stopped checking my phone so much when I'm trying to focus - we get obsessed with doing something that we forget doing nothing is sometimes the actual answer.

Honestly that "condensation on the inside of a terracotta pot" thing is exactly what made me realize I was doing the same thing. I read somewhere that if you see moisture beads on the inside of the pot it means the soil is staying wet way too long and the roots are basically sitting in a swamp. Took me way too long to figure out that my succulents were turning yellow and mushy because I was drowning them in January when they're supposed to be dormant.
