Shoutout to the $8 rubber toilet flange over the $25 wax ring kit, saved me a whole weekend
My downstairs toilet started leaking at the base about 3 weeks ago and I was about to buy the fancy wax ring kit everyone talks about. My neighbor who used to do plumbing work told me to grab a rubber flange seal instead for 8 bucks at the hardware store down in Tulsa. I put it in on a Saturday morning, took me 20 minutes, and it hasn't dripped once since. The wax ring I pulled out was cracked and squished, and honestly I think the rubber one is just gonna hold up better down the road. Anyone here run the rubber ones long term and had them fail, or are they actually as solid as this guy claims?

How did you prep the surface before dropping that rubber flange in? I ask because my brother in law did the same thing a couple years back and it held fine for about 8 months, then started weeping just a tiny bit at the base again. When he pulled it up the rubber was fine but the closet flange itself was slightly warped, so the seal never sat flat. That's the part that worries me with the rubber ones, they seem way less forgiving if the flange is not perfectly level. Wax squishes into gaps, rubber just kind of sits there and hopes for the best. If your flange was in good shape then yeah, I bet you are fine for years, but I would keep an eye on it around the cold months when things shrink and expand.
