Hot take: the dump in my town used to be free and now it's $40 a load, and I think it changed how we all deal with junk around here

Started hauling my own stuff to a buddy's place out in the county when he burns, saves me the fee every time. Check if anyone you know has a burn pile or a dumpster you can toss into before you pay that 40 bucks.
