Grinding finer vs dosing more: which one are people getting wrong?

For me, grinding finer was the bigger game changer over dosing more. I was underfilling my basket and trying to compensate with more coffee, but a finer grind gave me way better extraction without making my shots taste overstuffed. Once I dialed in the right grind size, my consistency jumped way up and dosing became just a final tweak.

My buddy Mark at the coffee shop near my place always says this same thing about his pour overs. He went from 14 grams and a coarse grind to 12 grams and a much finer one, and now his brews actually taste like something. It reminds me of how people in general try to fix things by adding more stuff instead of just changing how they do it. Like with cooking, everyone wants to dump in extra seasoning but they never think to just cook the food slower or cut it smaller. Grinding finer is basically the coffee version of that whole mindset.
