Warning: my first try at roasting with a popcorn popper set off every smoke alarm in the house
Tried the air popper method in my kitchen in Austin last Saturday and filled the whole place with smoke after just 4 minutes, so now I want to know if anyone roasts outside on a porch and how you keep the beans from getting too dark. Do you just stand there with a timer, or is there a trick to pulling them at the right moment?
Burned my first batch so bad the beans looked like tiny charcoal briquettes and my wife made me set up on the back porch after that. Standing out there with a timer did not work for me at all because the wind kept messing with the heat and the beans went from tan to ebony in like 45 seconds. What saved me was just listening for the first crack and pulling them right when it slowed down, since the sound tells you way more than any clock. Now I roast on the porch with a box fan blowing the smoke away from the door and I actually like it better than being stuck in the kitchen.
