Tried a rubber mallet on my split-face block corners last week and the chipping basically stopped
I've been setting split-face block on a retaining wall out in my backyard in Henderson for about 3 weeks now, and I kept getting these ugly spalled corners whenever I tapped a unit into line with my 3 lb sledge. A guy I know from the supply yard mentioned I should try a rubber mallet on the final taps instead of the sledge, and honestly I figured it was going to be useless. First course I did with it, I hit the block maybe 15 or 20 times to set it and not one corner broke off. Turns out the sledge was just putting too much shock into the face and the rubber takes the edge off without losing the seat. I still use the sledge to get the unit close, then switch to the mallet for the last quarter inch or so. Cut my waste on corner blocks by about half over the past week, which at 6 bucks a piece adds up. Curious if anyone else does the two hammer thing or if you just got better feel with one and I'm overthinking it.
