Bought a $45 rice cooker at Goodwill, and it's been paying me back for 8 months straight
I grabbed a slightly beat up rice cooker from the Goodwill on 5th for $45 back in January because my electric bill was killing me and I was eating way too much takeout. Turns out I use this thing like 4 times a week now, rice, oatmeal, steamed veggies, even dumped some dried beans in there once and they came out fine after a couple hours. Before this I was spending maybe $60 a month on rice bowls and burrito spots near my apartment, so I figure it's saved me close to $380 so far. Only catch is the nonstick coating is starting to flake a little on the bottom, so I'm wondering if I should just ride it out or grab a new one. Has anyone else had one of these cheap cookers crap out on them after a while, or do they usually hang in there for years?
That "nonstick coating is starting to flake" part is the real warning sign, my buddy kept using his flaking cooker for another year and the rice started tasting like burnt metal. He finally tossed it when the flakes got into his oatmeal and never looked back, said a $30 replacement was way cheaper than the worry. For 45 bucks and 8 months of savings you already won, so maybe just grab a cheap new one and keep the old pot for steaming veggies in a metal rack.
