A guy in a Lisbon hostel bet me 20 euros that skipping the airport train would cost me more, and he was dead right
So I was in Lisbon in March, staying at a place near Rossio, and I'd planned to just grab a taxi from the airport because I figured splitting it with two other people would be about the same as the metro plus the hassle. This guy in my dorm, an Aussie who'd been in town like 5 weeks, told me that was dumb and that the metro plus a short walk would run me under 2 euros. I told him the taxi would be fine. He bet me 20 euros I'd spend more.
Taxi came out to 18 euros total, so 6 each, which honestly felt fine until I realized I'd also left my water bottle in the cab, so add 1.50 for a new one. Meanwhile the metro would've been 1.80. He collected his 20 and bought us both beers with it. Still not mad about it but I learned to actually check the train price before assuming a cab split is close.
Anyone got a city where the airport train is genuinely not worth it? I keep hearing Rome is a mess but I've never tried it.
Rome's train is actually pretty solid, it's the Leonardo Express that runs every 15 min or so and drops you right at Termini. The real mess there is the flat rate taxi, since it's a set 50 euro fare into the center no matter what, so the train wins unless you're splitting four ways. Where the train genuinely loses is somewhere like London, Heathrow Express costs a fortune and the Piccadilly line takes forever, so a shared cab or the slower train ends up being the smarter call. Your Lisbon metro price was right too, it's under 2 euros for a single. Aussie guy knew his stuff lol.
