I used to book hotels months ahead, now I wait until the day before I arrive

For years, I would lock in a hotel in Lisbon or Prague the second I booked my flight, thinking I was getting the best deal. That changed after I got stuck with a non-refundable room in Barcelona and saw the same place drop its price by 60 euros the night before check-in. Now I use a couple of apps to watch prices and only book my stay 24 hours out, which has saved me hundreds. Has anyone else had luck with this risky move, or did you get burned?

You're brave, but I'd never risk it during a big festival or holiday week.

Sixty euros is a huge drop for a single night in Barcelona.

Sixty euros is a huge drop" - yeah, I used to think that was way too much too. I was always that person finding hostels for 25 bucks and thinking people were crazy paying more. But I actually booked a decent hotel in Barcelona for that price last month and it changed my mind. The location was perfect, I could walk everywhere without stress, and @wyattc76 is right about timing though - I wouldn't try it during a huge event either. Sometimes you just gotta pay for the convenience and safety if it fits your budget.
