Scouring hostel boards taught me more than any app ever could

Those crowded bulletin boards with handwritten notes led me to the best free concerts and potlucks. Now, everything is digital and sometimes feels less personal. Do you think budget travel has become too easy with all the apps?

That Barcelona app group chat organized a last-minute paella night nobody planned.

Do you think the real loss is missing out on those random, unplanned connections? Like, an app tells you the best potluck, but the board might have led you to a weird one where you ended up splitting a cab with someone for the next three days. The convenience is great, but it feels like an algorithm deciding who you meet.

Apps just give you more options to choose from. You can still find random stuff if you want to.
