Traveled for 10 years before I realized I was overpacking by 15 pounds

Last trip to Portland I hauled a 40-pound suitcase up three flights of stairs in a walkup and thought 'this is fine' until I saw a guy next to me with a 25-pound backpack doing just fine. Turned out I was bringing outfits for 'what if' scenarios that never happened, like a fancy dinner I never went to. Anybody else have a packing wake-up call that hit them mid-trip?

Man, I had the exact opposite problem for years. I used to be so proud of showing up with just a carry on for a two week trip, like I was some kind of minimalist genius. Then I got stuck in Denver for an extra three days because of a blizzard and had to wear the same pair of jeans and a hoodie for 72 hours straight, doing laundry in a hotel sink. Realized I was only packing for the best case scenario, not the actual reality of travel. Now I bring one extra pair of pants and a backup shirt just in case, feels like a good middle ground.

Oh man, that Denver story gives me cold sweats. I've been there with the sink laundry and the sad wet jeans, it's the worst. I think you found the sweet spot with one extra pair of pants and a backup shirt.
