Just realized I was wrong about meal planning saving money

I used to think meal planning was just a waste of time. You spend hours mapping out dinners and then half the stuff rots in the fridge anyway. Last week I overheard a cashier at the grocery store in Boise telling someone she saves $60 a week just by writing down what she already has in her pantry before buying anything. That hit me because I always just grab stuff at the store without checking my cabinets. So I tried it Monday night and found I already had rice, beans, and spices I forgot about. I made three dinners from stuff I already owned and skipped the expensive steak aisle. Has anyone else found a simple trick like that which actually cut their grocery bill down?

Meal planning definitely isn't for everyone (I still think it's kind of a pain), but that pantry check trick is pretty solid. I actually do the opposite though - I plan my meals around what's already in my fridge so I don't have to buy much at all, and I usually end up spending around $40 less per week than when I just winged it. The problem with strict meal planning is people treat it like a recipe book instead of a way to use up what they've got, you know? Like that cashier in Boise (not Oregon, obviously) probably just knows her kitchen better than most of us do. Not saying you're wrong, just that maybe the trick is less about strict planning and more about knowing your own pantry.
