My entire weekly spread got soaked on a camping trip in the Smokies
I was setting up my tent near a creek last fall, and my backpack tipped over. My journal fell right into the water. The pages for the next two weeks were a soggy, inky mess. I had to dry it out over the campfire, which made the paper all wavy and hard to write on. I ended up using a pencil for the rest of the trip because my pens just smeared. It taught me that my fancy system means nothing if it can't handle a little rain. Now I keep a small, waterproof notebook for trips. Has anyone found a good pen that actually writes on damp paper?

Your fancy journal got baptized by the creek. Nature has a way of reminding us that simple gear is often the best gear. A pencil is the only pen that truly works on wet paper.

Simple gear is often the best gear" sounds good until you're trying to write in a downpour with a pencil that keeps breaking. A good waterproof notebook and a solid pen mean your ideas survive the trip home. I'd rather have my notes safe and readable than prove a point about simplicity. Sometimes the right tool for the job is the one that actually works when things get messy.

Yeah but @parkerb23 has a point, what good is a pencil if it just snaps? What do you do when your simple gear fails?
