Why does nobody talk about dulling knives on the rail?

Spent 6 years hanging carcasses and always sharpened once a week. Last month a journeyman watched me and asked why my edge was chipped. Turns out the metal hook was scraping the blade every time I slid it off the rail. Switched to a plastic guide clip, 20 bucks at a supply shop in Omaha. Now I sharpen every two weeks, same bite. Anyone else ever wreck a blade on something dumb like that?

Funny you mention that, my old man had the same issue but with his filet knife against the cutting board drain. Spent years blaming the steel until he noticed the little aluminum lip was shaving it down. Plastic clip saved his edge too, cost him a case of Busch.

Same thing happened with my grill grate, @seanjohnson, those plastic brushes saved my sanity too.
