A machine shop guy in Detroit told me to stop babying my anvil

Ive had this 150 lb anvil for 8 years and always used a soft hammer face, worried about marring the surface. Last spring a retired machinist watched me work and said 'youre treating it like a museum piece, hit it like you mean it or sell it to a collector.' I switched to a hardened hammer and started using the edges more, and honestly the work is faster and the anvil holds up fine, no damage at all. Anyone else get told to stop being precious with a tool they thought needed kid gloves?
