I spent my hard earned cash on a leather knife roll from a random Etsy shop last October. Looked super nice in the photos, but the stitching started coming undone after maybe 20 uses. I carry my kitchen knives to catering gigs around town, so I need something tough. The seller stopped responding to my messages about a week later. Has anyone found a knife bag that actually holds up for daily work without breaking the bank?

I was swapping laces on my Red Wings last night and noticed the rubber sole was peeling away from the leather near the toe on both boots. Spent $180 on a Filson jacket 6 years ago and it finally started fraying at the cuffs

I bought this thing back in 2019 when I was working a warehouse job in Columbus. Thought I was crazy dropping that much on a coat. But man, it survived 4 moves, a winter shoveling snow for my neighbor's driveway business, and even got caught on a chain link fence once. The fraying is just now showing. I sent Filson a message about getting the cuffs fixed but their repair wait time is like 8 weeks now. Anyone else have luck getting them to fix old stuff or is it just worth paying a local tailor? The coat still works fine otherwise, just looks a bit rough around the edges.

Last winter I swore by thick cotton socks for hiking in New Hampshire, even when my feet got clammy and cold. My buddy Dave kept pushing me to try a pair of Darn Tough merinos he got from a shop in Conway. I finally gave in after a 6-mile hike up Mount Pemigewasset where my toes went numb by mile 3. That night I borrowed his spare pair for a morning walk and my feet stayed dry and warm the whole time. Three years later I own 8 pairs and threw out all my cotton socks except for lounging around the house. Bought a $40 leather belt from a department store and it fell apart in 6 months

That cheap belt started cracking and peeling after a few wears. Went to a saddle shop near me and paid $85 for a full grain leather one. Had it for 3 years now and it just looks better with age. Anyone else find that spending more on belts saves you money in the long run?

Last Tuesday I dug out my grandma's old cast iron skillet to make cornbread. I've tried fancy nonstick pans over the years but that thing just works better every time. The seasoning on it is so dark and smooth after all those decades. Has anyone else found older gear that just outperforms the new stuff?

Realized I was ruining my cast iron skillet for years

had this old lodge pan my grandpa gave me and i was scrubbing it with soap and a metal scrubby every time i used it. just thought thats how you clean stuff, right? then last month my buddy who works at a diner saw me doing it and laughed his ass off. said i was stripping the seasoning every damn time. he showed me how to just use hot water and a stiff brush, then dry it on the stove with a little oil. now it actually cooks eggs without sticking and i feel like an idiot for all those years of fighting with sticky food. anyone else get taught wrong by someone who didnt know better?

I finally ditched my plastic spatula for a fish turner and wow

I was at a restaurant supply store in Phoenix last month and grabbed a 6 inch fish spatula for like $6. Figured I'd use it for fish but now I use it for everything. Burgers, eggs, even lifting cookies off a sheet pan. That thin flexible metal gets under stuff way better than a thick plastic flipper. My old one cost maybe $4 and melted on the edges after a year. This thing is stainless steel and feels like it'll outlast me. Anyone else ditch their regular spatulas after trying one of these?

My favorite kitchen knife failed after 12 years of daily use

I bought a Victorinox chef's knife back in 2012 from a restaurant supply store in Portland. Last month I noticed the blade started chipping after I sharpened it, which never happened before. I think the steel just gave out from all those years of cutting on plastic boards. Has anyone else had a good knife suddenly stop holding an edge after a long time?

The day my Filson bag got mistaken for a trashed jacket on the bus

I've had this Filson rucksack for about 8 years now. It's been through rain in Portland and dust storms in New Mexico. Last Tuesday I was taking the bus home from work and set it next to me on the seat. Some guy sits down, picks it up, and asks the driver if anyone lost a beat up jacket. I had to tell him no, that's my bag. It looks that rough. The canvas is faded to a weird gray tan and there's a patch on the bottom where I rubbed through the fabric hauling mail bags. But honestly, that's why I love it. Nothing else I've owned held up that long without falling apart. Has anyone else had a piece of gear get so worn it looks like trash but still works perfectly?

Guy at the counter told me I was ruining my cast iron skillet

I always scrubbed my cast iron with soap and water after cooking, thought that was fine. A customer in my store told me I was stripping all the seasoning off and that I should just use salt and a paper towel. Tried it for a month and the difference is night and day, food slides right off now. Anyone else get set straight by a random stranger on their gear care?

The $8 sharpening stone that made me trash my $80 knife set

A chef at a diner in Portland told me my "premium" kitchen knives were actually garbage because I was using a pull-through sharpener. He handed me his cheap King 1000/6000 whetstone and showed me how to use it in about 5 minutes. Now I spend maybe $15 total on a stone every couple years and my $30 Kiwi knives cut better than anything from a box set. Has anyone else had their mind changed by a random stranger about something you thought you had figured out?

Debate: Is patching your own jeans worth it or just a waste of time?

Last week I spent about 4 hours patching a hole in my favorite pair of Levi's 501s using an iron-on patch and some denim scraps. They held up for three days then ripped again right next to the patch. But my buddy swears by sashiko stitching and says his patched jeans have lasted two years now. Has anyone actually had good luck with DIY denim repairs or is it better to just buy new ones?

I found my dad's old Carhartt from the 90s in his garage and that zipper still works smooth. Meanwhile I've had to replace two jackets in the last 3 years because the zipper teeth strip out. Anyone else notice this or am I just buying the wrong stuff now?

Rant: my $40 cast iron skillet outlasted three nonstick pans in five years

Bought a Lodge skillet at a hardware store in 2019 because I was tired of replacing Teflon pans every 18 months. The nonsticks always started flaking right after the warranty expired. This thing is scratched up and ugly but still cooks perfect eggs and sears steak better than anything new. I just wipe it down and oil it. Why did I waste money on fancy nonstick for so long? Anyone else make the switch and never look back?

Just realized my old Stanley thermos outlasted my first marriage

I was loading up for a fishing trip last weekend and grabbed my dad's old Stanley thermos he gave me in 2008. That thing still keeps coffee hot for 12 hours no problem, even after being dropped off a tailgate in Montana. Found a crack in the cup lid where a buddy slammed the truck door on it back in 2011... never leaked though. Anyone else got a beat-up piece of gear that just won't quit?

Lost my cool at the hardware store when a returns clerk told me my 5-year-old drill wasn't covered

I brought in a drill that finally gave out after building two decks and a shed. The kid at the returns counter said their 'lifetime warranty' only applies to the original owner with a receipt - who keeps a receipt for 5 years? I have to tape mine inside tool boxes now, has anyone else run into this nonsense?

Carried a basic Swiss army knife for 15 years before a guide showed me the blade steel was garbage

I was on a camping trip out near Moab and this old guide needed to borrow a knife to cut some paracord. Handed him my red Victorinox and he just laughed. Said it couldn't hold an edge past one use. Took me 15 years to realize I was just sharpening a dull blade every trip instead of buying something decent. Has anyone else stuck with a cheap tool way too long just because it was familiar?

Switched from leather work belts to nylon webbing 3 years ago

I used to buy a new $50 leather belt every 9 months because they sagged and cracked from carrying a tool pouch on a roof. Then I grabbed a $20 nylon rigger's belt from a safety supply store and it's still going strong with zero stretch. Has anyone else made the swap and found the nylon holds up way longer, or do you stick with leather and just replace it more often?

Found a 20 year old Lodge cast iron skillet at a garage sale last Saturday

I was driving through Springfield last weekend and spotted a rusted old skillet in a pile for 5 dollars. Brought it home, scrubbed it with steel wool and vinegar, then seasoned it in the oven three times. Cooked eggs in it this morning and nothing stuck at all. Has anyone else revived an old pan like this?
