Canvas tents vs nylon, the canvas won after one rainy week in Maine

I camped 6 days near Acadia in October and my buddy had a nylon tent, I had an old canvas wall tent that belonged to my grandpa. The first night the rain hit hard and his fly leaked at the seams, soaked his sleeping bag by 3am. My canvas stayed dry even with the wind blowing sideways, that thick weave just sheds water like a duck's back. I mean sure, canvas weighs about 15 pounds more and takes longer to set up, but I didn't have to pack up wet and moldy gear. The condensation inside was way less too, the fabric breathes instead of trapping every drop of sweat. He spent 2 hours at the laundromat in Bangor drying everything out, I just folded mine up and drove home. Has anyone else gone back to older materials like this and found they just work better for real weather? I'm curious if I got lucky or if it's a solid pattern.
