Lost my favorite knife at a camping site and now I'm rethinking my whole carry setup

Last summer I was up at Lake George for a weekend trip and somewhere between setting up the tent and cleaning fish by the fire, my old folding knife slipped out of my pocket. I had that thing for about 12 years and it was a gift from my dad. I spent a good hour walking around with a flashlight looking for it but no luck. Has anyone found a reliable way to keep a pocket knife secure while you're hiking or doing camp chores?

Oh man, I gotta play devil's advocate here - maybe losing it is a sign to just embrace the chaos and go with a cheap beater knife that you won't sweat losing.
