PSA: A guy told me my old cooler was "worth $200" and it made me rethink why I give stuff away
I was loading my old blue Coleman cooler into my trunk at the Riverside Park lot on Sunday when a guy named Marcus walked up and offered me $200 cash for it. I said no thanks because I was bringing it here to give away free, and he looked at me like I was nuts. What he said next stuck with me, he goes "man, if it's free people just grab it, they don't even need it." Now I'm second guessing myself. Do you all ever worry that free stuff just ends up in someone's garage instead of actually getting used?
Did you ever find out what happened to something you gave away? My buddy Dave gave his old grill to a neighbor two summers ago and then saw it sitting in the guy's backyard a year later, totally rusted out and never used once. That one still bugs him. But then he gave away a bike to some kid down the street and saw the kid riding it every single day, so it really just depends on the person. I figure once you hand something off, it's out of your hands, and even if it sits in a garage, at least it's not in a landfill. The cooler guy had a point but I would not let it stop you from giving stuff away.
