Rant: I gave away 214 things on here over 14 months and 11 of them came back to my porch
So I started keeping a running list in my phone back in January of last year, just tallying every single thing I handed off through this group. Hit 214 items last week, which sounds great until I did the boring part and split them into piles. 11 of those came back to me, either left on my steps in a trash bag or sitting in the little free pantry at the end of my block with my own handwriting still on the box. That is about 1 in every 20 gifts, and the stuff that boomerangs is almost always the bulky housewares nobody actually plans for, like a bread maker or a folding table. I am not naming names and I do not want to, but if you are handing off something big, please just ask the person what their plan is for it first. Anyone else track what they give away, or am I the only weirdo with a spreadsheet on my phone?
The bread maker thing hits close to home. I gave away a cuisinart ice cream maker two summers ago and saw it back on the free table at the laundry mat three weeks later with my blue tape still on the lid. After that I started just asking people point blank what they're gonna do with it, and you can usually tell in one sentence if it's a real want or a "sure I'll take it" thing. Now for anything bigger than a shoebox I make them meet me at the item, like come to my garage and carry it out, and weirdly nothing has come back since I started doing that.
