Talked to a retired splicer at a supply shop in Tulsa, made me rethink my whole tool setup
I stopped by Graybar on Tuesday to grab some connectors, and this old guy next to me at the counter starts talking about how he ran 40 years without a single cable toner. He said he just used the pair map on his meter and knew the plant so well he didn't need to chase signals. It hit me different because I've got $300 of toners and probes in my van that I lean on daily. He wasn't bragging, just said the job's less about gear and more about knowing your routes and reading the taps. Now I'm wondering if I'm overthinking my trouble calls with all this fancy equipment. Has anyone else dropped the extra tools and gone back to basics? What's the one thing you carry that you'd never give up?
