Old electrician warned me not to mount that satellite dish on my roof vent pipe
Back in 1997 I was helping a buddy install cable for his parents house in Austin. This grizzled old guy named Hank who ran the shop kept yelling at me about mounting dishes on roof jacks. Sure enough 4 months later that leak showed up right through their ceiling in the living room. Cost them like $800 in drywall repair. Has anyone else had a simple cable job turn into a plumbing nightmare?

Oh, that Hank sounds like he knew his stuff. I've seen more than a few ceilings ruined because someone thought a roof jack could hold a dish without eventually letting water in.

That's the thing with shortcuts in home improvement, they usually just kick the can down the road. People see one guy do it and figure it'll work for them too, ignoring all the waterlogged drywall and mold they're risking. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience, a proper mount is always worth the extra hour of work.
