Still can't believe I doubted G4's late night block
Back in like 2003 I thought G4 was just another junk channel trying to ride the gaming wave, total cash grab stuff. Then I caught Cinematech one random night around 11pm and it was just raw gameplay footage with no commentary, weirdly hypnotic, and I was hooked for months after that. The X-Play reviews with Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler were actually sharp too, way better than anything on TV at the time. Anyone else remember watching Attack of the Show for the segments that had nothing to do with games?
Cinematech was the best thing on that channel honestly. No voiceover, no cuts to a host trying to be funny, just straight gameplay and some weird ambient music in the background. I'd leave it on while doing homework and look up an hour later with no idea what I'd even been watching. Attack of the Show was the same deal for me, the game stuff was fine but the random tech reviews and Olivia Munn doing whatever bit they came up with that week was what kept me there. It really was the wild west of gaming TV before YouTube ate all of it.
