Just found out CA disability caps at $1,620 a month
I was checking the EDD website last night. Thought I'd get like $2,000 or more based on what I pay in. Nope. Max is $1,620 per month in 2024. That's barely rent in Fresno. How are people surviving on that for weeks or months? Did anyone else get shocked by the actual numbers?

Yeah the cap is brutal, especially when you factor in taxes taken out. A friend of mine went through this last year and she ended up getting approved for partial disability through her employer's private plan on top of it, that made a huge difference. If your job offers any kind of short term disability insurance through work, check that first because it usually pays way more than EDD and covers that gap. Also dont forget you can apply for food stamps or rental assistance while you're out, those programs dont count disability income the same way. EDD is slow too so expect a few weeks before that first payment hits.
