My lawyer's advice on my SSDI denial cost me 8 months of back pay

Back in March, my attorney told me to wait for the reconsideration step because 'everyone gets denied the first time' and that rushing the appeal would look bad. I waited, got denied again in July, and now my hearing isn't until next June, so I'm out 8 months of benefits I could've gotten if I'd filed for a hearing right away. Has anyone else gotten that same advice and regretted following it, or did waiting actually help someone out there?
