I thought the ultrasonic cleaner trend was overhyped junk until I ran a 1970s Nikkor through one
Two techs at the bench kept pushing ultrasonic cleaners on me for about 6 months and I figured it was just a way to sell $90 machines to people who did not want to swab shutter blades by hand. Last month I got a beat up 50mm f1.8 with oil smeared all over the aperture blades and figured it was already ruined, so I dropped the whole lens assembly in a cheap 40kHz tank with some diluted simple green for 3 minute cycles. After 4 cycles the blades snapped back dry and clean with zero oil left and I did not have to pull the glass at all. I still do not trust it for anything with coatings I care about, and I keep the temp under 50C, but it earned a spot on my bench. Anybody got a cycle time they swear by for old leaf shutters, or am I playing with fire running those through too?
