Warning: check the aperture ring before you tear down a lens

I spent 2 hours last Tuesday stripping a 35mm prime at my bench in Austin, convinced the blades were stuck from old oil. Turned out the aperture ring was just set to f/22 and I kept testing it with the camera on auto. Every click sounded broken but it was completely fine. Has anyone else wasted time on a simple setting before going for the screwdrivers?

Did you see that forum thread where a guy forgot his diopter was adjusted and blamed the lens?
