A guy at a trailhead in Asheville said my tent stakes were junk, and he was right
Three summers back I was setting up camp near Asheville and this older guy watched me hammer in these thin aluminum stakes that came with my tent. He said, "Those will bend the first time you hit a rock, save yourself the trouble." I brushed it off until night two when a storm rolled in and two of my stakes popped right out of the ground, leaving my rain fly flapping all night. Next trip I grabbed a set of 10 steel stakes for about $15 and I have not lost a tent line since. It is funny how a random comment from a stranger sticks with you longer than any review you read online. I still pack those cheap aluminum ones as backups but they never leave the bag. Anyone else get gear advice from a stranger that turned out to be spot on?
My buddy Dave had almost the same thing happen at Grayson Highlands two years ago. Some guy in the parking lot told him his bear hang rope was too short for the trees up there, and Dave laughed it off until he spent 40 minutes walking around looking for a low branch while it got dark. Now he carries 60 feet of rope every single trip and swears that old guy saved him from a real mess.
