Changed my stance on using a tarp under my tent after a wet night in Ohio
I always thought a footprint was a waste of cash and just used the tent floor. But after camping near Hocking Hills last month, rain pooled under my tent and soaked everything through a thin spot. A guy at the campsite showed me how a cheap $10 tarp, folded slightly smaller than the tent, would have stopped that. He said if the tarp sticks out, it just catches water underneath. Now I see the point of a proper barrier and I'm picking one up before my next trip.

Yeah the sticking out part is what gets people. I made that mistake my first time and woke up in a puddle because rain ran right under the tarp and sat there all night. Folding it under is the key, that little trick saves so much hassle. A $10 tarp beats buying a whole new tent or dealing with soaked gear any day. That guy at the campsite probably saved you from a lot of future frustration. Took me one wet trip to learn that lesson too, never going back.
