Just realized my camp stove wind guard was killing fuel efficiency
I was packing up camp last week and this old timer next to my site at Rocky Mountain National Park saw my setup. He said 'you're blocking too much air, that stove is choking.' I had my wind guard wrapped tight around three sides like a wall. Took his advice and left a 2 inch gap on the bottom for airflow. My fuel usage dropped by almost half on that trip. Anyone else been overthinking their stove setup for years without realizing it?

Tight wind guards are the number one mistake people make, I've seen it kill boil times on everything from old white gas stoves to the new canister ones. Just tucking the bottom edge under the pot or leaving that gap creates a natural chimney effect that pulls fresh air through. If your flame is lazy and orange instead of crisp and blue, you're definitely choking it.

Three times I've rebuilt my MSR WhisperLite convinced I'd broken something before I realized I was just suffocating it with a wind screen. Now I just let it breathe and stop blaming myself.
