My $40 sleeping bag rated for 20°F kept me warm at 18°F until 3am, then I woke up freezing and checked the tag

Reading the fine print on the tag showed the rating assumes you're wearing a base layer and using a pad with R-value 4.5, which I didn't have, so has anyone else hit that hidden condition on gear specs?
