My buddy in Boise insisted I ditch my old 40-degree bag for a 20-degree one before a trip to the Sawtooths, and I woke up shivering at 3 AM because he was totally right.

Has anyone else had a friend give them gear advice that saved a trip, or maybe even the opposite where someone's 'pro tip' totally let you down?

Read a story once about a guy who almost got hypothermia because his friend told him cotton was fine for a base layer. That advice is basically a crime in my book. Good gear tips are lifesavers, literally. My own disaster was trusting a "pro" who said I didn't need gaiters for a super muddy hike, and I spent the whole weekend with soaked, freezing feet. Now I always double-check advice against a few sources before I head out.

My uncle swears by cotton in the desert.
