Skip the networking mixer, send a handwritten note instead

I stopped going to those after-work networking events in Columbus because everyone trades cards and no one follows up. Last year I started mailing a short, handwritten note to one person I actually clicked with after each job, and two of those led to referrals within 3 months. Anyone else find the old-school approach works better than standing in a loud bar?

Handwritten notes definitely hit different. I do the same thing, but I keep it super short. Just a couple lines about something specific we talked about, like their kid's soccer game or that project they mentioned. It takes five minutes at most. The key is to send it within 48 hours while the conversation is still fresh. I also write the address on the envelope by hand, no printed labels, because that's the detail people notice. The referrals I've gotten from those notes have been way better than any random card I got at a mixer. It's less volume, but way more quality.
