That "passion" question in interviews is getting out of hand

I heard a hiring manager say they won't even look at a resume unless the cover letter mentions passion for the industry. That seems crazy to me. I've been in payroll for 12 years and I don't feel passion about it, I feel good at it. Last month I interviewed at a place in Portland and the guy asked me what I do on weekends to stay sharp on tax codes. I told him I read the IRS updates on Sundays with coffee, and he looked disappointed. Like, no one is passionate about W-2 forms, right? Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like we're pushing people to fake enthusiasm just to get a foot in the door. Has anyone else noticed this shift, or am I just too jaded about the whole process?
