Mock interview backfired hard at a hiring event in Phoenix

Went to a free career fair last Tuesday and did a mock interview with a recruiter from a logistics firm. I thought I was nailing it, but she stopped me halfway and said I sounded like I was reading off a script, which I totally was from a prep guide I found online. Has anyone else had practice interviews go worse than the real thing, or is there a better way to prep that doesn't make you sound robotic?
