I was shaking hands at a booth and the recruiter pointed to my "managment" misspelling on the third line, right in front of two other candidates. How many interviews do you think I lost because of that one word before I finally saw it?

Burned $220 on a resume writing service, what a waste

I paid ResumePro Express $220 last March for a fancy rewrite and LinkedIn overhaul. They just used generic buzzwords my actual boss laughed at during an interview, and I got zero callbacks from 40 applications... So I redid it myself using my community college career center, which was totally free, and got two interviews in 3 weeks. Has anyone else tried one of those pricey services and regretted it, or is there a legit one out there that actually works?

Picked the unpaid internship over the paid gig, no regrets so far

Had two offers last month. One paid $18 an hour at a local marketing firm in Dayton, the other was unpaid but at a nonprofit doing grant writing. I took the unpaid one because the job duties matched what I actually want to do. Three weeks in, I've already drafted two real grant proposals and sat in on a budget meeting. The day my mock interview script fell apart in front of 3 strangers

Last month I signed up for a mock interview session with actual recruiters at a career center in Austin. I had my answers memorized, STAR format, all that. Then the first question was about a time I failed a project, and I froze, totally blanked on my script. I just started rambling about a group project in 2022 where we missed a deadline because our Slack channel got deleted. The recruiter actually laughed and said that real answer was way better than the canned one. Has anyone else found that ditching the script helps more than practicing it?

Finally hit 1,000 job applications at 31, weirdly proud of the number

I kept a spreadsheet since I started looking back in March, and yesterday I passed 1,000 applications logged. Most were rejections or silence, but about 40 got me interviews and 3 turned into offers I turned down. Saw a hiring manager's checklist at a coffee shop in Austin, it was brutal

I was grabbing a latte near UT last Tuesday and this recruiter left her binder open on the table. Her page had a star system for each resume, and one guy got a single star because his cover letter mentioned 'passionate' twice. She wrote 'fluff' next to it in red pen. Do hiring folks really toss candidates that fast over word choice?

Saw empty cubicles at a job fair and it hit different

Walked the career expo at the Denver Convention Center last Tuesday and half the employer booths had no one staffing them by 2pm. The recruiters who did show were mostly handing out QR codes instead of talking. Has anyone else noticed companies putting in less face time at these events, or did I just catch a bad day?

Can we talk about career fairs that are basically just PR stunts?

I went to a big career fair at the convention center downtown last Thursday and it felt like a total waste of 4 hours. Half the booths were just companies handing out branded pens and saying "apply online" without even looking at my resume. One recruiter literally told me they were only there for brand awareness, not to actually hire anyone. How is that supposed to help me prep for a career when they won't even talk about real job openings? Has anyone else walked out of one of these feeling like you got tricked into showing up?
