Finally hung my first set of stairs solo, 14 risers, and only scrapped one stringer
The homeowner wanted red oak treads on a closed stringer going up to a bonus room, and I measured the total rise at 104 inches on a Tuesday morning. I cut the first stringer too short by almost 3 inches because I forgot the tread thickness when I laid out the rise, so I ate the cost of a new 2x12 and started over. The second one dropped in clean, and by Thursday afternoon I had all 14 risers set with no squeaks when I walked them. My old boss used to say stairs will humble you faster than anything else in this trade. How do you all handle layout on closed stringers, do you use a framing square with stair gauges or cut a pattern first?
