Three years ago my neighbor hired a big downtown law firm for a simple property line dispute and ended up paying them $8,000 before they even talked to the other side.

So you're telling me they charged him for someone to read his emails? That's wild. Had a buddy once who got into a fight with his neighbor over a fence line. He went to some big lawyer and the guy wanted a retainer just to look at the survey. He ended up just talking to an old surveyor who had been doing it for forty years. Paid the guy fifty bucks and a six pack to look at the old maps and walked away with his answer. I think people just get spooked by property stuff and figure a big name means they won't get screwed. But paule53's buddy's story sounds about right. Big firms got a machine to feed and that machine runs on billable hours.

My $3 flea market skillet cleaned up better than my $40 new one

The older ones were machined smooth, not that bumpy stuff they sell now.

Just read that chickens can recognize over 100 different human faces and now I look at my flock differently

Yeah, "remember faces for up to two years" sounds about right from what I've read. I've kept chickens for a few years now and some of them definitely seem to recognize me versus strangers, especially when I'm the one bringing treats. Your mileage may vary depending on the breed and how much time you spend with them, but they're smarter than people give them credit for.

Three days of solid rain ruined my campsite setup last spring... still not over it

Man that "real survival expert" feeling is real though. I totally get where you're coming from. Honestly sometimes the trips that go sideways end up being the ones you remember most.

Rant: My friend said I was cheap for regifting candles - and I still think she was wrong

Well actually wax melts and candles aren't really the same thing.
