Learned last month in Tulsa to test fit stair stringers before cutting all 14
Cutting every notch on my miter saw for a full flight last month cost me a $60 board when the first test fit showed my riser height was off by 1/8 inch, so now I cut two stringers and check them on the wall before running the rest, and I'm curious if anyone else has a set order they stick to for this.
The "cut two and check them on the wall" move is smart and I'd take it one step further. Before I even touch the miter saw I clamp a scrap board to the wall as a mock stringer and mark my riser line on it, then hold my framing square up to check the tread and riser cut against that mark. That way I catch a bad rise before the saw ever runs, since the wall doesn't lie but a test fit on the floor can fool you if the slab isn't level. Then the two-stringer test fit confirms it and I can run the rest without second guessing. Losing a $60 board once teaches you fast.
