TIL from a 2x4 scrap: the guy at Hart's Lumber in Reno told me to stop buying pre-cut studs
So I'm standing at the yard in Reno last Friday picking up a bundle of pre-cut 92-5/8 studs like I always do, and this old guy named Walt who's been cutting there for who knows how long looks at my cart and goes, "You know those are just 8 footers someone lopped the ends off of, right?" I kind of laughed it off but then he walks me over to the rack and shows me the actual cost per board foot. Pre-cut was running me about 40 cents more a stud, and I go through maybe 200 a month on remodels. That's real money walking out the door. He said most framers don't care because the ends are already square and it saves a cut, but I've got a miter saw sitting on the tailgate anyway so what am I even paying for. I did the math in the truck, 200 studs times 40 cents, that's 80 bucks a month I've been basically donating. I'm not saying pre-cut is a scam for everyone, but I felt like a guy who buys shredded cheese for the same price as a block. Any of you run into this or am I late to the party on something everyone already knew?
