Used to eyeball every cut, now I keep a $3 pencil behind my ear like a nerd
Back when I started framing in Tacoma around 2011 I would just look at a board and mark it with my thumbnail, which worked about half the time and cost me a whole stack of 2x4s one summer. These days I have a carpenter pencil and a little speed square on me at all times, and my scrap pile went from a truck bed full every week down to almost nothing. My old lead guy Ray used to yell 'measure twice, cut once' and I rolled my eyes at him for two whole seasons. Anybody else keep a stub of pencil tucked behind their ear even when they are just walking the dog?
