Tried stapling tack strip through a scrap of underlay and it saved me on a 12x15 berber job in Toledo
I had a 12x15 berber stretch job last Tuesday in Toledo and the concrete was so crumbly that my tack strip staples kept popping loose. Out of frustration I grabbed a scrap of 8lb underlay, laid it over the strip, and shot the staples through both. They bit way harder and not one pulled out when I stretched. I ended up doing the whole perimeter that way and it added maybe 20 minutes to the job. The underlay acts like a washer and spreads the load so the staple doesn't just chew through the concrete. Only thing I'd watch is keeping the underlay flat so the strip sits level. Has anyone else tried backing their strip like this on bad subfloors, or do you just switch to a different fastener?
