I used to think buying cheap meat was the only way to save money

I saw my grocery bill after a month of buying chicken thighs and realized I was spending more than my friend who buys a whole chicken and breaks it down herself. Now I roast one on Sunday and get three meals from it for about $8 total. Anyone have other cuts that are cheaper to buy whole?

That whole chicken trick is so true, and @andrew_miller90 nailed it about paying for convenience.

Ever notice how the "cheap" option is often just the most convenient one? That whole chicken thing is the same logic as getting a coffee maker instead of daily Starbucks. We pay a premium to skip the tiny bit of extra work.

Totally get this, my grocery bill was insane until I started buying pork shoulder whole. It's way cheaper per pound and I can get roasts, chops, and grind some for sausage. Andrew_miller90 is right about paying for convenience, it's the same with pre-cut stew meat versus a big chuck roast you cube yourself. The upfront cost looks bigger but it lasts for so many meals.
