The $4 jar of dried mushrooms that outlasted my fresh produce habit
I used to buy fresh mushrooms every week at about $3 a pack and toss half of them when they turned slimy. Last month I grabbed a $4 jar of dried porcini at the Asian market on Grand Avenue, just to try. Soaked a handful in hot water for 20 minutes, chopped them up, and threw them in a stir fry with rice and frozen peas. They had way more flavor than the fresh ones and the jar is still half full after 4 meals. Anyone else keep dried stuff around as a cheap backup when fresh prices spike?
Wait, you got a $4 jar of porcini and it lasted four meals? I paid like $9 for a tiny bag at the grocery store last winter and it was gone after two dinners. That Asian market on Grand must be hiding some serious deals (I need to make a trip over there).
